The Sanctuary Mother of God

Eu estava disposto a fazer uns passeios curtos de bicicleta nesse fim de semana. Falei com um amigo que está voltando a pedalar, e que pretendia testar a bicicleta nova montada na loja Rodociclo. Então sugeri a ele três roteiros.
O passeio escolhido foi uma visita ao Santuário Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus, em Porto Alegre.

A partida foi descontraída. A manhã de domingo estava agradável.
Passamos por dentro do condomínio Jardim América, onde subimos umas rampas curtas de concreto, bastante inclinadas. Ali percebi o quanto o quadro Volare é rebaixado, o pedal quase encosta no chão. Não é um quadro ideal para trilhas.

Pegamos a rua Moises Antunes da Cunha e entramos num dos prédios do condomínio para visitar meus avós. O apartamento era no nono andar, colocamos as duas bicicletas dentro do elevador, o porteiro foi bastante solícito. Na saída do elevador encontramos uma moça que estava descendo com uma caloi.
-Hoje é o dia das bicicletas.

A visita foi curta. Em pouco tempo estávamos na Avenida Oscar Pereira.
Passamos pela Igreja Nossa Senhora da Glória, e seguimos em frente na direção do Bairro Cascata.


I wanted to make short strolls of bicycle in this weekend. I spoke with a friend who is coming back to bicycle, and he wanted to test his new bicycle mounted in the Rodociclo store. Then I suggested him three scripts. The chosen stroll was a visit to the Sanctuary of Ours Mrs. Mother of God, in Porto Alegre city.

The departure was relaxed. The sunday morning was pleasant.
We passed on the inside of the condominium Jardim America, where we got up short slopes of concrete, sufficiently inclined. There I perceived how much the Volare bicycle is lowered, the pedal almost leans in the soil. It is not an ideal bicycle for very bad roads.

We went by the Moises Antunes da Cunha street and entered in one of the building of the condominium to visit my grandmother and grandfather. The apartment was in the nineth floor, we placed the two bicycles inside of the elevator, the doorman was nice. In the exit of the elevator we found a woman who was descending with a caloi bicycle.
- Today it is the day of the bicycles.

The visit was short. In a little time we were in the Avenue Oscar Pereira. We passed for the Church Our Lady of the Glory, and followed in the direction of the Cascata quarter.

Tivemos de enfrentar subidas fortes a partir do Hospital Divina Providência.
No meio do caminho paramos algumas vezes. Uma das paradas foi em frente à casa que pertenceu ao cantor Teixeirinha. Os aclives só acabaram no Santuário.

We had to face strong ascents from the Hospital Divina Providência. In the middle of the way we stoped some times. One of the stops was in front of the house that belonged to the Teixeirinha singer. The ascents only finished in the Sanctuary.

O Santuário Mãe de Deus fica entre os bairros Cascata e Belém Velho. Está a cerca de 270 m de altitude. Foi criado no ano 2000 e abriga a imagem de Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus, a padroeira da cidade, que foi doada pelo Papa João Paulo II por ocasião da sua visita a Porto Alegre.
Chegamos lá por volta das 11:30 hs, a Igreja estava fechada. Abre para visitas e orações diariamente das 14h às 17h30min. As missas são celebradas nas quintas, sextas e sábados, às 16h.

The Sanctuary Mother of God is between the Cascata and Belem Velho quarters. The altitude is about 270 m. It was created in year 2000 and it shelters the image of Ours Mrs. Mãe de Deus, the patron of the city, that was donated by the Pope João Pablo II for occasion of its visit in Porto Alegre
We arrived so so 11:30 am, the Church was closed. It opens daily for visits and prays from 14h to 17h30min. The masses are celebrated in thursday, friday and Saturday, at 16h.


Ficamos algum tempo lá em cima olhando as paisagens. Dali dá para se ver grande parte da cidade.
Saímos de lá por uma estradinha curta que passa na beira de um pequeno lago.

We stayed some time up there looking at the landscapes. From there, great part of the city can be saw.
We left for one little and short road that passes in the side of a small lake.

Retornamos pela rua Santuário até a Avenida Oscar Pereira. Fomos na direção Sul.
Passando pelo Hospital Parque Belém, nem parecia que estávamos numa metrópole. As paisagens eram bucólicas.


We returned by the Sanctuary street until the Avenue Oscar Pereira. We went in the south direction.
Passing for the Hospital Parque Belem, it seemed that we were not in a metropolis. The landscapes were bucolic.

Entramos na rua Sarmento Barata e pegamos a Av. Belém Velho.

We entered in the Sarmento Barata street and catched the Av. Belem Velho.

Paramos para observar um parreiral no Bairro Vila Nova, bairro que foi colonizado por imigrantes italianos.

We stoped to observe a vineyard in the Vila Nova quarter; this quarter was colonized by italian immigrants.

Mais adiante tomamos um suco de uva e comemos queijo na “La Pipa Nostra”, cantina que tinha a forma de uma pipa, onde se vendiam produtos coloniais quadros e esculturas em madeira.

More ahead we took a grape juice and we ate cheese in the “La Pipa Nostra”, canteen that had a pipe form, there they sell pictures and sculptures in wood and colony products.

Pegamos a Rua João Salomoni e fomos sair na Avenida Cavalhada.

We took the João Salomoni street and we arrived in the Cavalhada Avenue.


Na Av. Teresópolis trocamos de bicicleta. Percebemos a diferença entre os quadro GTS e Volare sem demora. A conclusão foi que o quadro Volare é mais estável que o GTS. O quadro GTS tem resposta rápida aos movimentos, sendo bom para trilhas.

Seguimos pela Avenida Aparício Borges e entramos na Av. Bento Gonçalves. Ali me despedi do companheiro. Pedalamos 28 km.


In the Teresópolis Avenue we changed bicycle. We perceived the difference between GTS and Volare bikes quickly. The conclusion was that the Volare bike is more steady than the GTS. The GTS has fast reply to the movements, being good for tracks.

We followed for the Aparício Borges Avenue and entered in the Bento Gonçalves Avenue. There I left my friend. We cycled 28 km.

O Banhado dos Pachecos

Neste domingo, depois de um bom chimarrão, preparei minha bicicleta monark barra circular para um passeio matinal. Minha intensão era ir até o Refúgio de Vida Silvestre Banhado dos Pachecos.

O refúgio compreende uma área de aproximadamente 2.400 ha, que foi cedida pelo INCRA à SEMA (Secretaria Estadual do Meio Ambiente) em 2002. É uma das áreas mais importantes para a preservação de aves do Rio Grande do Sul.

O Banhado dos Pachecos faz parte de um conjunto de banhados formadores do Rio Gravataí: Banhado do Chico Lomã (Sto. Antônio da Patrulha); Banhado dos Pachecos (Viamão); e Banhado Grande (Gravataí e Glorinha). O conjunto é demominado Banhado Grande.

Existe uma luta para efetivação da Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) do Banhado Grande, que foi criada em 1998 pelo decreto estadual 38.971.

Sunday, after a good chimarrão, I prepared my "monark circular bar" bicycle for a matinal stroll. My intent was to go until the Shelter of Wild Life Marsh of the Pachecos.

The shelter has an area of 2,400 ha approximately, that it was yielded by the INCRA to the SEMA (State Secretariat of the Environment) in 2002. It is one of the most important area for the preservation of birds of the Rio Grande Do Sul state.

The Marsh of the Pachecos is part of a set of marshs that makes Gravataí river: Chico Lomã Marsh (Santo Antônio da patrulha city); Pachecos March (Viamão city); Great Marsh (Gravataí and Glorinha cities). All them together are demominated Great Marsh.

A fight to turn real the Ambiental Area Shelttering (APA) of the Great Marsh exists today, it was was created in 1998 for the state decree number 38.971

Enquanto eu tomava um mate de estrivo à beira do fogo, a bicicleta ficava encostada numa árvore como um cavalo à espera do dono.

While I was taking the last chimarrão sit in the the side of the fire, the bicycle was leaned in a tree as a horse waiting its owner.

Parti das imediações do distrito de Águas Claras pela RS 40 em direção à praça de pedágio. Um pouco antes da praça peguei uma estrada de terra, e entrei no Assentamento Rural Filhos de Sepé.

I began the stroll from the immediacy of the "Águas Claras" district of Viamão city taking the RS 40 road in direction to the toll square. A little before the square I took a land road, and entered in the Agricultural Lands Lay "Filhos de Sepé".

Passei por um canal de irrigação. A água tinha uma tonalidade escura. Era enegrecida mas não opaca.

I passed for an irrigation channel. The water had a dark tonality. She was blackish but not cloudy.

Entrei numa estrada vicinal.

I entered in a secondary road.

Havia chovido no dia anterior, tive que atravessar algumas poças dágua. Mas isso não foi difícil, cruzei as poças sem me embarrar, graças aos pára-lamas da monark.

It had rained in the previous day, I had to cross some puddles of muddy water. But this was not difficult, crossed the puddles without dirting myself, thanks to the mudguards of monark bicycle

Encontrei uma estação de bombeamento à beira da estrada. Aparentemente estava abandonada.

I found a pumping station in the side of the road. Apparently it was abandoned.

Fiquei curioso e entrei lá dentro. Havia alguns maquinários meio enferrujados.

I was curious and I entered there. It had some half rusted machines.

Perto dali estava a parte sul da lagoa da Incobrasa. A lagoa da Incobrasa é a flor do Banhado dos Pachecos. Cheguei às suas margens, ao longe vi enormes bandos de pássaros.

Near there was the south part of the Incobrasa lagoon. The Incobrasa lagoon is the flower of the Pachecos marsh. I arrived at its edge, far away i saw enormous groups of birds.

Segui pedalando por uma estrada às margens da lagoa.

I continued, cycling for a road at the edge of the lagoon.

A lagoa é parcialmente artificial. Dá para ver as pedras-ferro que compõe a represa construída pela Incobrasa. A água é enegrecida mas transparente. O solo do local é bastante escuro.

The lagoon is partially artificial. It gives to see the rock-iron that composes the dam constructed for the Incobrasa. The water is blackish but transparent. The ground of the place is very dark.

Continuei o pedal pela margem.

I continued cycling by the edge.

Chegando na parte norte da lagoa, havia uma placa proibindo caça e pesca. Tinha um entroncamento. A via principal vinha até ali, na face norte da represa, por um caminho paralelo ao que eu seguia. Dobrei à direita e continuei.

Arriving in the north part of the lagoon, had a plate forbidding hunting and fishing. It had a meet of roads. The main way arrived until there, in the face north of the dam, for a parallel way what I had followed. I turned to the right and continued.

Na face norte da represa, as águas estavam mais agitadas. Formavam-se pequenas ondas que pressionavam as marrequinhas (plantas aquáticas) contra as pedras. As ondas chegavam a formar espuma.

In the north face of the dam, the water were more agitated. Small waves were formed that pressured "marrequinhas" (aquatic plants) against the rocks. The waves formed foam.

Parei para observar no lado esquerdo da represa uma pequena lagoa. Era formada pela vazão das águas que vinham da lagoa grande.

I stopped to observe in the left side of the dam a small lagoon. It was formed for the outflow of the waters that came from the great lagoon.

A água vinha por canos de ferro desembocar ali naquele remanso.

The water came through iron pipes to discharge there in that backwater.

Segui na direção leste. No lado direito ficava a lagoa, no lado esquerdo o banhado.

I followed in the direction east. In the right side there was the lagoon, in the left side the marsh one.

Na ponta leste da lagoa havia uma prainha de areia e terra. Muita plantas aquáticas. Dali dava para ver as pedras e a linearidade da represa. A represa tinha cerca de dois kilômetros de extensão no lado norte.

In the east tip of the lagoon there were a small beach of sand and ground. Many aquatic plants. From there i could see the rocks and the linearity of the dam. The dam had about two kilometers of extension in the north side.

Me afastei da lagoa. Entrei numa estrada de terra que passa por dentro de outro assentamento. Encontrei gado e carretas de boi pela estrada.

I moved myself away from the lagoon. I entered in a land road that passed on the inside of another Agricultural Land Lay. I found cattle and carts of ox in that road.

Avistei mais algumas pequenas lagoas.

I saw more some small lagoons.

Havia algumas subidas leves. Fui subindo lentamente.

There were some light ascents. I was going up slowly.

Lá do alto dava para ver o Banhado dos Pachecos.

Up there i could see the Pachecos marsh.

A estrada continuou, passava por dentro do Assentamento Rural Novo Horizonte.

The road continued, it passed inside the "Novo Horizonte" Agricultural Land Lay.

Ela terminava na localidade de Morro Grande, distrito de Viamão. Ali peguei a RS 40 e fui para casa almoçar. Era quase meio dia. O percurso total foi de trinta e poucos quilômetros.

It finished in the locality of "Morro Grande", district of Viamão city. There I took the RS 40 road and went home for lunch. It was almost mid day. The total distance cycled was so so thirty kilometers.

Pedalando em Porto Alegre

O pedal de domingo foi curto. Treze quilômetros de Porto Alegre, nas ruas, avenidas, calçadas e praças. Depois de algum tempo parado, que o frio e os problemas reais ou imaginários congelam a alma, fui ver a cidade sobre duas rodas.
O bom é que assim, pedalando, a gente anda ligeiro quase como se fosse de carro, e vai onde quer quase como se fosse de a pé.

Eu tenho um amigo comprando uma bike na Rodociclo. Ele não sabe qual quadro escolher, se GTS ou Volare. E eu uso um quadro Volare boxxer para ir ao trabalho às vezes, treinar, e passear na cidade. Considero o meu quadro Volare fácil de manobrar, e que dá uma boa visão periférica. Confortável, rebaixado, pequeno, e relativamente barato, aprovei e recomendei aos amigos para pedais curtos metropolitanos. Por isso emprestei a Volare ao amigo, esperando que isso o ajude na escolha do quadro.

Pegamos as ruas no fim da tarde e fomos lentamente em direção ao Parque da Redenção, o Farroupilha. Calibrei os quatro pneus num posto de gasolina da Av Santana, onde confirmei que o câmbio traseiro da minha bike oficial, sob o lombo da qual percorro estes pagos, estava danificado.
-Não faz mal vamos assim.

Chegamos ao parque, nas imediações do Monumento ao Expedicionário.
Uma porção de gente jovem sentada nos bancos e mesmo nas gramas, muitas tomando térmicas e térmicas de chimarrão. Estava difícil de pedalar no meio da multidão. Entramos no mato, subi e desci umas rampas de concreto, pegamos uma espécie de trilha, parecia que estávamos longe da cidade: o verde, folhas secas no chão, troncos de árvores, raízes, terra, buracos. Voltamos ao asfalto pegamos o caminho dos parques, a ciclo-faixa, no trecho que segue na contra-mão pela rua da República. Qual caminho! Ciclo-faixa apagada, caminho tomado de veículos automotores.
-Vamos pela calçada.

Atravessamos a Av Perimetral, encontrei uma prima que há muito tempo não via.
-Não podemos deixar o corpo esfriar.

Então logo seguimos pela Av Borges de Medeiros, sob o viaduto Otávio Rocha.
Entramos na Rua da Praia, a Andradas, repleta de camelôs e pessoas, difícil de pedalar. Seguimos adiante, passando pela Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana, pela Igreja Nossa Sra das Dores, e pelos quartéis, até a Usina do Gasômetro.

Chegamos na hora do pôr do sol. As coisas adquiriram uma tonalidade alaranjada. Centenas de pessoas por lá.
-Esfriou. Vamos tomar um quentão.

Mas antes encontrei o Edgardo e o Helton, velhos companheiros de pedal. O Edgardo está organizando o quinto passeio do grupo bike-rs.
-Vai ser bala! Em São José dos Ausentes.
Se Deus quiser, eu vou estar presente.

O Helton estava numa bike peculiar, própria para cicloturismo, um bagageiro enorme, quadro raro.

Seguimos adiante, quase noite, o quentão ficou para a próxima. Trocamos de bike - peguei a Volare.
Entramos no Parque Marinha do Brasil, na pista de velocidade para bikes. Pegamos uma trilha na grama, até o local onde a moçada faz piruetas de BMX. Dali até o shopping Praia de Belas foi um tapa.

Escureceu, ligamos os piscas, o farolete. Fomos sair na Av Azenha através da Av Gal Caldwell. Tinha acabado o jogo do Grêmio contra o Vasco. Pedalamos ao lado de centenas de torcedores cabisbaixos.
-Vamos fugir dessa multidão.

Entramos na Av Oscar Pereira.
-Não te assusta que não subiremos a lomba do cemitério!

Antes da subida entramos numa rua tranqüila e escura.
Em casa tomamos licor de mel, guaco e agrião.
Ambas as bikes aprovadas por meu parceiro.


CYCLING IN PORTO ALEGRE

The sunday pedal was short. Thirteen kilometers of Porto Alegre, in the streets, avenues, sidewalks and squares.
After some stopped time, that the cold and the real or imaginary problems congeal the soul, I went to see the city on two wheels.
The good is that thus, cycling, people go fast almost as if were driving a car, and goes where it wants almost as if it were walking.

I have a friend buying a mountain bike in the Rodociclo shop. It does not know which bicycle to choose, if GTS or Volare. I use a Volare boxxer bicycle to go job sometimes, to train, and to cycle in the city. I consider my Volare easy to maneuver, and that it gives a good peripheral vision. Comfortable, lowered, small, and relatively cheap, I approved and I recommended to the friends for short metropolitans trips. Therefore I loaned the Volare to the friend, waiting that this helps it in the choice of the bicycle.

We got the streets in the end of the afternoon and were slowly in direction to the "Redemption Park", the Parque Farroupilha. I calibrated the four tires in a gas station of the Santana Avenue, where I confirmed that the back exchange of official mine bike, under seat of which I cycle by these lands, was damaged.
- it does not make badly we go thus.

We arrived at the park, in the immediacy of the "Monument to the Expeditionary". A portion of seated young people in the banks and same in the grams, many taking thermal botthels and thermal bottles of "chimarrão".
It was difficult of cycling in the way of the multitude. We enter in the weeds, we went up and we went down concrete slopes, we took a specie of track, seemed that we were far of the city: the green, falling leaves in the soil, trunks of trees, roots, ground, holes.

We came back to asphalt we got the way of the parks, the cycle-band, in the stretch that follows in the against-hand for the the Republic street. Which way! extinguished cycle-band, taken way of automachine vehicles.
- Let´s go for the sidewalk.

We crossed the Perimetral Avenue, I found a cousin who has much time did not see.
- We cannot leave the body to cool.

Then soon we followed for the "Borges de Medeiros Avenue", under the "Otávio Rocha" viaduct. We entered in the "Rua da Praia street", the Andradas, full of peddlers and people, difficult of cycling.
We followed ahead, passing for the "House of Culture Mário Quintana", for the "Church Our Mrs. of Pains", and for the quarters, until the "Gasômetro". We arrived in the hour of the "sunset in the Guaiba river". The things had acquired an orange tonality. Hundreds of people were there.
- It is turning cold. Let´s take a "quentão".

But before I found the Edgardo and the Helton, some of my old mountain biker´s friend. The Edgardo is organizing the fifth stroll of the group bike-rs.
-It goes to be bullet! Will be in the "São José dos Ausentes".
If God wants, I am going in this stroll.

Helton was in a peculiar bicycle, proper for cyclotours, an enormous baggage compartment, a rare bicycle here.

We went ahead, almost night, the "quentão" was left for the next time. We changed bikes - I took the Volare. We entered in the "Marinha do Brasil Park", in the track of speed for bikes. We got a track in the gram, until the place where the guys make their shows riding BMX.
From there until "Praia de Belas Mall", was fast. It became gloomy, we turned on the blink and light in the bicycles.
We went until the Azenha Avenue through the Gen. Caldwell Avenue. The soccer play of Gremio soccer club against the Vasco had finished. So we cycled in the side of hundreds of sad people walking in silence.
-Let´s go run away from this multitude.

We entered in the Oscar Pereira Avenue.
-Don´t be afraid, we will not go up the hill of the cemetary!

Before the ascent we entered in a calm and dark street.
At home we drank liquor made with honey, "guaco" and watercress.
Both bicycles approved by my partner.
